It is so lovely when the last reminders of winter are pushed aside by new flowers and foliage in our yards and green spaces. May was a busy transition month for the NDHA. Spring clean-up is normally completed and our summer lawn and landscape activities get into full swing, all dependent on weather of course. The NDHA is responsible for ensuring all of the manicured green spaces and medians are looked after. In June, the grass and shrubs will suddenly wake up with a burst of spring growth. The “shagginess” you see from this burst of growth will get trimmed up this month. Please let us know if you see a space that needs extra attention so we can pass that information along to ULS.
Annual General Meeting (AGM)
The NDHA’s AGM will be held Tuesday, June 10, starting at 7:00pm at the Westside King’s Church (3939-69 St SW, Calgary). In May, NDHA members were provided with formal notice of the AGM. If you are not able to attend the AGM, filling in a proxy helps ensure a successful meeting as a quorum of 165 proxies and attendees is required. If you have any questions, please reach out and contact us. Thank you to all who attend in person or provide their proxy. A successful AGM allows NDHA to continue to provide service to the community without interruption.
Planter Pots
Flowers and greenery are scheduled to be planted into the seasonal pots near the roundabout in late May, weather permitting. The plants will start small, but with summer sun, a little heat and regular “TLC” from the staff, they will grow to fill the large pots beautifully. Special thanks to Pixie Gardens for their wonderful work!
2025 Fees
The annual NDHA fee of $325 is due on June 29th. As you know, this is a legally required fee secured by an encumbrance on your property title. Please access our website to log in and pay the fee if you have not already done so. You can also check to confirm if your payment has already been made and update your contact information as necessary. If you are new to the community and need to set up your membership portal, please contact our Membership Director at NDHAmembership@ndha.ca. Questions about the fee or your account balance can be emailed to the NDHA Treasurer at accounts@ndha.ca.
Squeaky Wheels get the Grease – Call 311!
The NDHA encourages Discovery Ridge residents to use the City of Calgary’s 311 service more often. Funding and prioritizing of needs across the City include analyzing 311 inquiries from residents. City councillors actually ask, “How many 311 calls were taken on this issue?” The more calls to 311, the higher the issue moves up the priority scale. All 311 calls must be logged and investigated. Whether it is damaged curbs, potholes, dead trees in parks, graffiti needing removal, excessive speed of motorists or any other concern, use 311 so the matter can be registered. Please note that there is a 311 app, so reporting can be done even faster than a phone call if that is your preference!
Thank you, DRCA!
The NDHA (your Homeowners’ Association) and the DRCA (your Community Association) are NOT the same organization. We each have very different, yet equally important roles in Discovery Ridge. And both are run by volunteers! The NDHA’s role is focused specifically on landscape maintenance and snow clearing, The DRCA manages not only all the “fun stuff” (Stampede event, Music in the Park, etc.), but also owns and operates the recreational facilities, the bottle shack, publishes the Ridge Review and is the community point of contact for issues of community interest including matters for the police, City programs, Griffith Woods Park, the ring road, and several other concerns. It’s a BIG JOB! If it wasn’t for the awesome DRCA volunteers, we would have no community association to take care of all they do. Think of the added value it brings to the community, and by extension, your property. Please visit their website (discoveryridge.com) and purchase an inexpensive $25 annual membership. Thanks, DRCA volunteers!
Volunteers
NDHA is a volunteer-based, community run, non-profit organization and it is responsible for maintaining green spaces in Discovery Ridge. The Board of Directors is a group of your neighbours volunteering their time to oversee the use of the funds collected to maintain and improve the public green spaces in the community. Volunteers ensure we can do this without having to hire an external management company. This saves the NDHA at least $100,000 each year, which we then use to improve our community.
We are currently seeking new volunteers to play a variety of roles, including Landscape Director, a Newsletter Article Director, and a Membership Director. If you like working with contractors to ensure quality work and resolving issues, if you would like writing to tell your neighbours what is going on through the newsletter, or if you are an expert at keeping a database of members accurate and up-to-date, we would like to talk to you! You would be supported by a group of dedicated Board Members and you would learn a lot about working with landscape contractors, the City, and the Provincial government. If you are interested, please reach out through our web site, by email at NDHAmembership@ndha.ca, or call us at 403-237-9595 and we can discuss what role you could play.
We are always happy to hear from our NDHA members. You can contact us in various ways via our website, send us an email at General@ndha.ca, or even call us at 403-237-9595. As always, if you are interested in helping the NDHA maintain one of the most beautifully landscaped communities in Calgary, reach out through the web site or email us.
