Happy November, everyone! Winter is looming of course, and with it comes our transition from greenspace maintenance to pathway snow clearing. The first snowfalls of the season often melt during the day and become ice by evening, so please use caution, especially on hills, and let us know if an area needs extra attention.
FALL CLEANUP: ULS crews have been preparing median beds, linear greenspaces and our parks for winter. If an early snowfall interrupts this work, any remaining areas will be completed in the spring. ULS snow removal crews and equipment are in place and ready to go!
SNOW CLEARING: On occasion this winter, you may notice the community pathways are cleared while sidewalks next to main roadways remain snow covered for several more days. Discovery Ridge residents are understandably confused regarding why, because ULS clears snow in both areas. The reason is that the NDHA shares responsibility for snow clearing in the community with the City of Calgary. The contracts are independent of each other, however, with the NDHA and City of Calgary having different policies governing snow clearing:
- City policy is that sidewalks under its control will be cleared within 24 hours of the end of a snow event. **If it is snowing anywhere in the City, the snow event is not considered “ended”.
- The NDHA’s policy is to have walkways and sidewalks under its control cleared within 24 hours of a snowfall in the community, and every 24 hours thereafter until the snow stops.
Please refer to FAQ #22 on our website for a map showing where the NDHA provides service. Note that unless adjacent to a private home or business, sidewalks on Discovery Ridge Boulevard, Discovery Ridge Lane, and Discovery Ridge Hill, in addition to several small sections of sidewalk in our community, are City responsibility. Please call 311 if you have concerns about snow clearing in these areas, or if a homeowner is not clearing the sidewalk adjacent to their property.
HOLIDAY LIGHTS AND FOLIAGE: Lights have been installed in the trees at our entrance and near the leisure ice rink near the recreation centre; both will be turned on in the second half of November. You will notice a new design format this year; we hope you will find it pleasing! The winter holiday foliage display in the entrance planters will be installed for your enjoyment before the next newsletter.
