August 2019 Update

Happy summer to all!  The rainy season extended well into July this year, and the greenspaces of Discovery Ridge certainly benefitted.  The community is looking very green and lush indeed! We hope you have been able to stroll the pathways and take in all the natural beauty we have to enjoy, right on our doorstep. Special thanks to ULS for their ongoing excellent work to keep our community looking it’s best!

The various landscaping projects undertaken this summer by the NDHA should be finished or wrapping up by the time you are reading this.  Rain always causes delays of course, and our project schedule did suffer a bit because of it.  On that point, we’d like to add that rain can also sections of our green spaces to be purposely missed when the mowing crews attend certain areas. If the ground becomes saturated, the heavy mowers will tear up the turf as they pass over it.  Also, some greenspaces have grassy slopes.  ULS crews will not mow turf on those slopes if it is determined that doing so could pose a danger to the operator due to slippery conditions.  Both of these situations did come up in our community in June; we thank you for your patience.  We had to wait until things dried up enough to allow ULS to resolve the issue of unusually long grass in those areas.

It is wonderful to see our entrance waterfall operable for the summer once again!  Apologies for the delay in start-up, but water lines in the city didn’t fair well over this past winter given the extended deep freeze we endured.  Upon opening the 8- inch main line in late May (it feeds the irrigation system and the waterfall), we discovered that the line had cracked and needed repair. Excavation was necessary as well as a special part, but we got it fixed and everything is functioning normally again.

Of course, all of the above is managed by 9 member-volunteers who are also your neighbors in Discovery Ridge.  They meet monthly, and diligently work behind the scenes to ensure that things continue to run smoothly.  Your 2019/20 NDHA board members are as follows:

President – James Wilson

Vice-President – Ian Brown

Treasurer – Susan Chittick

Secretary – Laurent Blais

Director – Sharon Salloway

Director – Millard Matthews

Director – Joe MacLean

Director – Caroll-Ann Bainbridge

Director – Shaune Pasay

We are quite proud of how our community looks and hope you are as well. If you happen to notice an area that might need attention such a bed being missed or damage incurred due to storms or other factors, please let the NDHA know.  We are always happy to hear from our NDHA members; please access our website at www.ndha.ca to send an email or call us at 403-237-9595.

Have a wonderful summer! Safe travels to all!
